Blue Monkey

Blue Monkey grows indigo in Amsterdam and brings neighbours together through collective dyeing and textile making.

Our Mission

Blue Monkey invites people to re-dye, repair and reconstruct existing garments using natural indigo grown in Amsterdam. Rather than discarding worn or unused clothing, we encourage transformation through shared hands-on processes, reconnecting participants with the material and social dimensions of textile production.

This year, we aim to expand the indigo garden in Amsterdam Noord. Our goal is to cultivate indigo on 300 sqm of land, growing from our current 30 sqm.

What is Indigo?

The indigo plant has traditionally been used for fabric dyeing to achieve a blue color, and we are cultivating Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria).

Work With Local Community

The Blue Monkey project also seeks to foster stronger connections within the local community. Through collaborative dyeing activities, we aim to create a shared experience that unites neighbors.

Our slogan, โ€œIndigo Dye for Everyoneโ€ expresses our belief that everyone should have the chance to participate in indigo dyeing works and refresh their textiles sustainably. By reconnecting people with traditional dyeing techniques, we hope to add value not only to textiles but also to the environment and the local community.

Blue Monkey TOKEN

The Blue Monkey Token (MKY) is a research tool that documents participation in the indigo field project. Rather than functioning as currency or investment, MKY records contributions such as time, labour and knowledge, making collective production visible over time.
